Since the times of the ancients the didactic tradition preceded the written word in recording human history. Through stories and rich aural gobbets of information epic tales cascaded from generation to generation.
As children our first words define our relationship with the world and to be human is to communicate.
Our sense of hearing is vital to our understanding of the world, whether it’s news, good or bad, local or international. It’s always on and creates a dimension of the world which is part of our fabric of existence.
Sound informs, entertains, relaxes, inspires, alerts and shapes our perspective. Unlike other senses we have no choice as to what we hear sound is around us wherever and whenever we are awake.
It can be beautiful and frightening - the dawn chorus or the crash of lightning, the sound of leaves rustling or the unmistakable horror of explosion. Sound prompts our physical and emotional response.
In the age of the black mirror we control our audio perhaps more than ever before and can select how and where we engage with our chosen media, so for brands wishing to communicate in a time of self selection these windows of opportunity need to be used effectively.
Lean in, lay back, listen, prompt action, provoke thought or bring memories to the surface…above all things, sound is ubiquitous.
